Twycross zoo is well known as one of the greatest primate centers in the entire world. This attractive zoo lies on an 80-acre site in Leicestershire, United Kingdom. It attracts over half a million visitors , of which more than 33,000 are children annually. Twycross zoo opened its doors on Sunday-26-May 1963. It was founded and pioneered by Nathaniel Evans and Molly Badham-pet shop owners who shared great love for primates. Their objective was to to make their vision of protecting primates a reality and to set high standards which were to be emulated by zoos across the world.

The mission of the zoo is to campaign for the preservation and conservation of endangered species which are widely poached for their meat and threatened by expansive agriculture and deforestation.

In 2013, Twycross zoo won the Biaza’s award as the best conservation/sustainable zoo. Its education department was awarded as the best education project in offering many discovery opportunities for different groups/types of people. The program was identified to have significantly increased awareness, understanding and knowledge concerning animals and their agony in the jungle.

Attractions and Experience

Since its opening, Twycross zoo is now a registered charity widely known as a specialist-primate-center with a wide variety of monkeys and other ape species for instance bonobos, gorillas, orang-utans and chimpanzees.

Twycross zoo is also known for its breeding of primates, being named as the first United Kingdom zoo to record thirteen births of different primate species for instance the agile gibbon, bonobo, woolly monkey and siamang. You will also find a range of other animal species for instance Asian elephants, penguins, snow leopards, tapir, meerkats and Amur leopard which happens to be the world’s rarest big cat.

Twycross zoo prides in having more than 500 animals of 150 different species for you to view. While at the zoo, you can walk with the ring-tailed lemurs in their walk-through enclosures; watch the penguins take their daily walk and behold the troop of tamarins leap over your head in their magnificent treetops. The keepers at the zoo present regular talks to help you in learning more about the animals at the zoo.

The state-of -the-art Himalaya center is a three-hundred-seat all day restaurant offering delicious food. It overlooks a Himalayan-themed snow-leopard-enclosure and a shopping Bazaar. Other fascinating facilities at the zoo include the fish bar, indoor picnic facilities and the Dome.

These conference amenities gives Twycross the ability to play host to different events for instance lavish wedding receptions. It offers special views of the zoo and the rare opportunity to interact closely with animals. In additions, the zoo has rooms capable of hosting 500 visitors and more. The zoo is located four miles from junction 11 making it readily accessible. Free parking is also offered.


Many of the visitors at Twycross are parents and their children.  The majority gave a four/five-star rating confessing that the services offered at Twycross zoo are of high quality. Most of the visitors state that they enjoyed the facilities, scenery and the welcoming/supportive attitude of the staff at the zoo. One is quoted saying, “Absolutely loved this park. We arrived at opening and left at closing. We purchased photo vouchers and the Thomas Photo book as a souvenir for our fantastic day. I give it five stars out of five.”
